In March, the ENDURE team headed to Ulster, Northern Ireland for a productive - and memorable – few days of meeting, updates, and explorations.
Hosted by our local collaborators, Chris and Rory, the trip offered the perfect opportunity to reconnect in person and share updates across all Work Packages.

From DNA extraction progress and respirometry studies, to advances in degradation rates and modelling, each team member brought valuable insights to the table. We reviewed new data, discussed evolving methodologies, and refined our upcoming field season plans. It’s safe to say the project is gaining momentum on all fronts.

Among the highlights was a presentation showcasing the use of remote sensing and legacy data – building on insights from major UK and Danish initiatives – to classify structural integrity of hundreds of wrecks and assess their environmental vulnerability using computational modelling. The microbial team shared developments in DNA recovery protocols, and there was also a discussion on the technical challenges currently faced with the respirometry setup.
But it wasn’t all spreadsheets and power points. We also took time to explore some the natural and cultural wonders Northern Ireland has to offer. A windswept afternoon at the Giant’s Causeway gave us a change to stretch our legs and marvel at geology in action – while Dunluce Castle, perched dramatically on a cliffside, reminded us of the region’s deep human history and enduring connection to the sea.

This meeting not only strengthened our scientific collaboration but reminded us of why we do this work: to better understand and protect the fragile underwater cultural heritage. Thank you to our hosts, Chris and Rory, and all team members for your energy, ideas and laughter. Onward!
